Will The Radiation From Commercial Induction Cookers Affect My Health

Will the Radiation from Commercial Induction Cookers Affect My Health?

Commercial induction cookers produce radiation, but the amount is relatively small and usually within a safe range. Generally speaking, the greater the power of the induction cooker, the greater the radiation.

According to research and testing, at 0.3m around the induction cooker, 1m above the cooking surface, and 0.5m below, the electric field strength of some induction cookers will exceed 87V・m, and the magnetic induction strength will also exceed 6.25uT. However, in normal use, the radiation will generally not cause obvious harm to the human body.

The public exposure limits recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) are: 50Hz electric field strength (5000V/m), 50Hz magnetic field strength (100μt), commercial induction cooker frequency band (20kHz), reference limit (27μT – converted by frequency)

I. Reasons for Radiation Generated by Commercial Induction Cookers

1. Working Principle

Commercial induction cookers use electromagnetic induction heating technology. The electronic circuit board inside them generates an alternating magnetic field. When the bottom of the iron-containing pot is placed on the stove surface, the pot cuts the alternating magnetic field lines.

It generates alternating currents, i.e., eddy currents, in the metal part at the bottom of the pot. The eddy currents make the iron molecules in the pot move irregularly at high speed, and the molecules collide and rub against each other to generate heat energy.

In this process, since the pot cannot absorb 100% of the magnetic field energy, part of the magnetic field will leak out from around the pot, thus forming electromagnetic radiation.

2. Influence of Design Structure

Suppose the design of key components, such as the coil disk of the induction cooker, is not reasonable, or the shielding effect of the shell is not good. In that case, it may cause more magnetic field leakage, thereby increasing the radiation. For example, some low-quality induction cookers use poor-quality insulating and shielding materials to reduce costs, which cannot effectively block the emission of radiation, causing the radiation value to exceed the standard.

II. Harm of Radiation from Commercial Induction Cookers to the Human Body

1. Impact on Pregnant Women and Fetuses

Studies have shown that long-term exposure to high-intensity electromagnetic radiation environments may interfere with the bioelectric field in pregnant women, affect the normal development of the fetus, and increase the risk of fetal malformations.

However, there is no conclusive evidence that the radiation generated by the normal use of commercial induction cookers will cause direct and serious harm to pregnant women and fetuses, but out of caution, pregnant women are advised to minimize the time they are exposed to induction cookers.

2. Impact on Children

Children’s body tissues and organs are in the growth and development stage and are more susceptible to electromagnetic radiation than adults. Long-term exposure to electromagnetic radiation may cause children to have decreased immunity, memory loss, abnormal development of the nervous system, etc., and may also increase the risk of children suffering from diseases such as leukemia.

3. Impact on Other Groups

For ordinary people, long-term and close contact with the radiation of commercial induction cookers may cause discomfort symptoms such as headaches, insomnia, fatigue, palpitations, etc., and may also have certain adverse effects on the cardiovascular system, reproductive system, etc., but these effects usually need to be gradually manifested under long-term and high-intensity radiation exposure.

III. Methods to Reduce Radiation from Commercial Induction Cookers

1. Choose High-quality Products

When purchasing commercial induction cookers, choose products produced by regular manufacturers and certified by quality, and check whether the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) indicators of the products meet national standards. Such induction cookers will pay more attention to radiation control during the design and manufacturing process, and the radiation leakage is relatively small.

2. Use Pots Correctly

Use iron or stainless steel pots that match the induction cooker, and avoid using inferior or mismatched pots because inappropriate pots will reduce the heating efficiency of the induction cooker and increase the risk of radiation leakage. When placing the pot, make sure that the bottom of the pot is in full contact with the coil disk of the induction cooker, which can improve the absorption efficiency of the magnetic field and reduce the leakage of the magnetic field.

3. Keep a Proper Distance

When using a commercial induction cooker, try to keep a certain distance from the induction cooker to avoid long-term close contact. Generally speaking, it is more appropriate to keep a distance of more than 30-50 cm from the induction cooker because the radiation intensity will be reduced to about a quarter of the original for every doubling of the distance.

4. Control the Use of Time

Avoid using the commercial induction cooker continuously for a long time. If you need to cook for a long time, you can take a proper rest or take a break before continuing to use it to reduce the cumulative effect of radiation.

5. Install Protective Facilities

When decorating the kitchen, you can consider installing electromagnetic shielding materials, such as electromagnetic shielding nets and electromagnetic shielding coatings, on the kitchen walls or worktops. These materials can effectively block and absorb electromagnetic radiation and reduce the impact of electromagnetic radiation on the human body.

6. Maintain Good Ventilation

Ensure that the kitchen has good ventilation conditions so that the heat generated by the induction cooker during use can be dissipated in time to avoid aging or damage to the internal components of the induction cooker due to excessive temperature, thereby increasing the risk of radiation leakage.

IV. People Who are Not Recommended to Use Induction Cookers

1. Pregnant Women

As mentioned above, pregnant women have a special biological environment in their bodies. The fetus is in the growth and development stage, cell division is active, and they are more sensitive to electromagnetic radiation.

Although there is no conclusive evidence that the normal use of induction cookers will cause serious harm to pregnant women and fetuses, to maximize the healthy development of the fetus, pregnant women should try to avoid contact with induction cookers and other radiating electrical appliances.

2. Infants and Young Children

The body functions of infants and young children have not yet fully developed, and their tolerance to electromagnetic radiation is low. Their bones and nervous systems are in a rapid growth stage, and electromagnetic radiation may have a potential impact on their growth and development. Therefore, it is not recommended to let infants and young children stay in an environment where induction cookers are used for a long time.

3. People with Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity

Some people are more sensitive to electromagnetic radiation and suffer from electromagnetic hypersensitivity. After being exposed to electromagnetic radiation, these people will experience a series of discomfort symptoms such as headaches, insomnia, fatigue, palpitations, etc., which have a greater impact on their health. Therefore, it is not recommended to use induction cookers.

4. Groups with Serious Diseases

For some people with weak bodies and low immunity, such as the elderly and patients, their bodies have relatively poor tolerance to electromagnetic radiation. Long-term exposure to electromagnetic radiation may aggravate physical discomfort and affect the recovery from the disease. Therefore, such people should also try to avoid using induction cookers.

Summary

Although commercial induction cookers will generate radiation, as long as we choose regular and qualified products, use them correctly, and take appropriate protective measures, the impact of their radiation on the human body is very small, so there is no need to worry too much.

However, for special groups such as pregnant women, infants, patients with electromagnetic allergies, and groups with serious diseases, for their health, it is recommended to minimize the chance of contact with induction cookers.
